The Harships of the "Middle Passage"

After being captivated, they were walked ashore, a long and gruesome walk that would end in the surrendering of their freedom. Once reaching shore they were “inspected, branded, and held in prisons until there were enough to fill a ship.” What a horrific trauma, but this was only the beginning. The ships were filled to the point where people barely had room to breathe. A lot of captives died of suffocation and diseases during this dreaded voyage called the “Middle Passage” to America. Some even committed suicide by throwing themselves into the sea.
